Human Fish is Slovenia’s first proper craft brewery, based in the town of Slovenj Gradec in the far north of the country, and there are three different kinds: pale ale, red ale and oatmeal stout. Cheekily named after a small blind amphibious creature indigenous to Slovenia’s Karst caves, the brewery was started in 2008 by a resident Australian who decided to settle in Slovenia after years of living in more exotic locales. The “slightly evil” brew can currently be found on tap at Irish Pub, Premier Pub and Cutty Sark in Ljubljana, but will hopefully find its way behind more bars in the near future. If you ask nicely they’ll also deliver mini kegs directly to your home, which work out to about half the price you’d pay per pint at a pub.

Two Slovenian brews, that dominate the local market and fiercely divide the population are Union and Laško. Union’s loyal following resides mainly in and around Ljubljana, while most of the rest of the country prefers Laško. The rivalry only seems to have been marginally tempered by Laško’s acquisition of Union in 2005 – although coincidently, the country’s aggregate level of irony increased noticeably around the same time.

A small cave salamander, because of its human-like skin tone also known as Human Fish, has broken the world’s record for longest-lived amphibian.

The salamander, also called olm and Proteus Anguinus, has a maximum lifespan of over 100 years, concludes the new study, published in the latest Royal Society Biology Letters. That’s nearly double the age of other often-elderly amphibians:

Japanese giant salamander (lifespan of 55 years)

African bullfrog (lifespan of 45 years)

European toad (lifespan of 40 years)

Mudpuppy (lifespan of 34 years)

About 100 m from the entrance into the Postojna Cave visitors can enter the beautifully calcified Passage of New Signatures, where visiters can see live specimens of the cave fauna. Close by, visiters can also see a speleo-biological laboratory, where different measurements and observations of the underground world are performed. The 220-meter long shaft is part of the Postojna Cave system and takes place 20 to 30 meters under the surface. On the north side it opens into the Old Cave, while the south side has been overwhelmed by debris. As it was easily accessible from the Old Cave, some noteworthy visitors in the 19th century were allowed to write their names on the walls. In 1931, a speleobiological station was set up in the passage. In 2002, the sediments blocking the old entrance to the passage were removed and Vivarium Proteus was set up. In Vivarium Proteus you can see the most knowing creature in Postojna Cave – proteus anguinus a.k.a. human fish.
